What is Erosion Control?
Erosion control is the practice of preventing or controlling wind or water erosion in agriculture, land development, construction, costal erosion, river bank erosion. Effective erosion controls handle surface runoff and are important techniques in preventing water pollution , soil loss , wildlife habitat loss and human property loss
Engineered Solutions for Erosion and Sediment Control
Soil erosion has a significant impact on valuable water resources throughout the world. Attempting to quantify the costs of soil erosion is challenging at best. The number of variables contributing to erosion along with the costs for cleaning up the effects are extensive. Soil erosion impairs water resources used for drinking, navigation, recreation or irrigation. No matter which way you look at the effects of soil erosion, the best remedy always comes back to keeping the soil where it belongs.
There are several hydroseeding products available for controlling soil erosion.
Wood mulch with tackifier
This is what we typically use in our standard hydroseed mix. It is a short term mulch that works great for holding the seed in place long enough for it to germinate during the growing season. Works great on flat ground to moderate slopes and holds up under light to medium rain fall.
Bonded Fiber Matrices or BFM by Profile
Hydro-Blanket® Bonded Fiber Matrix (BFM) by Profile sprays on as mulch, but dries to form a breathable blanket that bonds more completely with the soil, more effectively prevents erosion, and saves time and money compared to erosion control blankets as well as other BFMs.
Patented Flexterra® High Performance-Flexible Growth Medium™ (HP-FGM™)--proven to surpass all hydraulically applied mulch products and turf establishment blankets:
Dormant Hydroseeding
With BFM and Flexterra it is possible the hydroseed in the winter. Weather you are trying to sell a house or get a city or county inspector off your back these products allow you to hydroseed in the winter. They will hold your seed and soil in place until it is warm enough to germinate.

- Only BFM to combine Thermally Refined® wood fiber and multi-dimensional tackifiers for greater water-holding capacity, more complete germination and faster vegetation establishment
- Proven to control erosion more completely than other BFMs
- Anchors intimately to the soil through proprietary cross-linked, hydro-colloidal tackifiers and activators
- Completely biodegrades and is non-toxic, like all Green Design Engineering™ products
- Compared to erosion control blankets, Hydro-Blanket:
- Faster, safer and easier to apply than rolled blankets
- Eliminates staples and stakes; tenting and drilling
- Eliminates extensive and more costly site preparation
- There is a high degree of certainty heavy rains will not follow application
- The soil is dry and rain is not expected within 24–48 hours after application
- A chemical bond is strong enough to meet slope severity and length needs
- The required functional longevity of soil protection is 12 months or less
- You require a moderate factor of design safety
Patented Flexterra® High Performance-Flexible Growth Medium™ (HP-FGM™)--proven to surpass all hydraulically applied mulch products and turf establishment blankets:
- Immediately effective upon application—bonds directly to soil
- Superior erosion control—99% effective at multiple large-scale testing laboratories
- Excellent functional longevity that lasts through grow-in
- Ideal for dormant seeding and long-term protection in arid climates
- Less soil preparation, faster lay down and lower installed cost than rolled blankets
- Faster vegetative establishment and greater biomass production than any rolled blanket or hydraulically applied mulch available
- Minimizes soil loss and turbidity of effluent runoff
- Proven to be completely environmentally friendly
- You need the fastest vegetation establishment possible
- The site demands immediate erosion protection and you need to eliminate risk from impending wet weather
- The site requires both mechanical and chemical bonds to withstand greater surface flow and/or severe slopes
- Soil needs erosion protection for 12 to 18 months (Ask a Profile expert about new CocoFlex ET-FGM for 18 to 24 months of protection)
- You require a high factor of design safety
- You are considering combining with Futerra® Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM) to utilize the GreenArmor™ System
